This article contains spoilers for tonight’s Coronation Street, which has not yet aired on TV but is available to watch now on ITVX.

Coronation Street has confirmed why Gail Platt (Helen Worth) hasn’t returned to Weatherfield following the tragic fire at the Platt’s house.

The soap stalwart left the cobbles behind on Christmas Day for her happy ever after with new husband Jesse Chadwick, and has been living it up in France ever since.

Though many fans may be wondering why she hasn’t rushed home to be with her family after their lives were torn apart by the devastating fire earlier this week, the answer became clear in tonight’s episode.

During a conversation between David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) and Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls), it became apparent that Gail doesn’t yet know about the fire.

Though David debated getting in touch with the matriarch to inform her of the situation, and the fact that grandson Max Turner (Paddy Bever) was in hospital, Audrey warned him not to.

She pointed out that it was only a few months ago that stress had driven Gail to have a heart attack, and that she didn’t want to put her health at risk by worrying her with this.

She argued that there was nothing Gail could do about it anyway, and that it was best not to stress her out over something she couldn’t control, and David eventually agreed.

Soon, Gail won’t be the only Platt to have left Coronation Street behind, as Max is also set to depart in the coming weeks.
Actor Paddy Bever has already filmed his final scenes, but details of his exit remain a mystery.

In tonight’s episode, he woke up from his coma after being taken off the ventilator.

However, it was only Shona by his side, as David had been arrested for the fire.
