Desperate David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) took shock action in Monday’s Coronation Street as he ordered his own death.

The longstanding character has been in a hopeless situation for months now, with gangster Harvey Gaskell (Will Mellor) on still his back after David stole cash from him last year.

After events took another turn in the latest episode of the ITV soap, David saw no way out and plotted to have himself killed so he could finally settle his debt and protect his family.

At the start of the episode, David’s stepson Max Turner (Paddy Bever) was up in court for setting alight to the Platt household in a failed insurance scam last month.

His loved ones were stunned when the judge handed him a six-year sentence, which will also bring an end to actor Paddy’s three-year stint on the show.

David was in despair for Max, but soon had bigger things to worry about when his so-called mate Andy caught him alone at the salon and pulled a knife on him, revealing Harvey had ordered him to kill David.

David managed to talk him down, but Harvey later found another way to get to him upon the news Max was being transferred to a new prison.

David received a text from Harvey with a thinly-veiled threat on Max’s life, saying he has someone on the inside of the new prison who will do whatever he says.

In a panic and seeing no way out, David called Andy back to the salon and told him to kill him so that wife Shona Platt (Juila Goulding) would have the life insurance money to pay Harvey off, and Andy would have also made good on Harvey’s orders.

Plotting a hit-and-run accident, David instructed Andy to run him over at 2pm the following day on Rosamund Street, and to do so ‘hard and fast’ to ensure he dies.

Spoilers for this week’s episodes have already revealed that Andy will come through on his side of the deal when David is ploughed down as a helpless Shona watches on. But what they don’t expect is that another Weatherfield local will be caught up in the accident.

With both left in a life-threatening situation, will they pull through – or will David’s plan have tragic, unintended consequences?
