Devastated Phil makes big decision about best mate Nigel in EastEnders as he says goodbye

EastEnders spoilers follow for Thursday’s (March 5) episode, which is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) broke down in tears after Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) was moved to a care home as he enters the advanced stages of dementia.
The hardman’s former best mate returned to the Square in December 2024 after three decades away, reuniting with Phil as he explained that he’d been diagnosed with dementia.
Nigel’s comeback came at the right time for Phil, who was struggling with his mental health at the time and contemplated taking his own life.
Having Nigel back in his life proved instrumental in his recovery and, with the help and support of Nigel’s wife Julie (Karen Henthorn), Phil vowed to look after his friend, becoming his full-time carer.
But with Nigel now in the advanced stages of the disease, it was decided that it would be in his best interests to move him into a care home.
Realising that Nigel deserved the chance to reunite with estranged daughter Clare Bates (Gemma Bissix), Julie summoned her back to the Square.
Clare was devastated to realise just how far Nigel’s illness had progressed, especially since she was kept out of the loop about his diagnosis, and it proved heartbreaking for her when he didn’t recognise her.

With some encouragement from Lexi Pearce (Isabella Brown), Clare decided to treat Nigel to a farewell party in the Vic, where his nearest and dearest regaled everyone with stories of the former VHS store owner.
Julie gave Clare what for upon her arrival but, realising that she was trying to do something nice, the teacher relented. When Nigel subsequently recognised her, Clare fought tears as the two shared a look of love.

In emotional scenes, Phil and Clare took Nigel to settle in at the care home. The changes proved difficult, with Nigel becoming aggressive as care home worker Aaliyah, played by Hope Street star RhéAna Kamalu, handled the situation as a devastated Phil and Clare watched on.
After Nigel hit her, Clare made tracks, telling Phil to inform Julie that she’d keep in touch and visit her stepdad.
Phil, meanwhile, found the whole thing overwhelming and, branding Nigel’s situation ‘torture’, he broke down in tears.

Aaliyah said he is suffering from ‘carer burnout’ and suggested that he take some time to look after himself before returning to the home, allowing Nigel to adjust to his new living situation
Heartbroken Phil added that he ‘couldn’t do this’ and visited Nigel, apologising as he thinks he’s let him down.
‘I love you Nige, I do’, he said. ‘But I can’t watch. I can’t do this, I’m sorry’. In emotional scenes, he took Nigel’s hand for a moment and left.
