Coronation Street fans fear the end for ‘broken’ Daniel

Coronation Street fans are growing deeply concerned for Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard).

Over the past few weeks, the character has been trying to process the news about Megan Walsh (Beth Nixon).

Daniel was in a relationship with Megan, but had no idea at the time that she was only with him to hide the abuse she was inflicting on Will Driscoll (Lucas Hodgson-Wale).

The local school teacher has struggled to get his head around this massive betrayal, and has also dealt with rumours from students about Daniel supposedly knowing that Megan was in a relationship with a teenager.

Ken Barlow (William Roache) and Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) advised Daniel to take some time away from Weatherfield to get his head straight. He was initially reluctant to go, but arrived at Number 1 with young Bertie a while later and asked Ken and Adam to look after him.

It was then revealed that Daniel had no intention of leaving the cobbles. In the flat all alone, he sat in the dark with some alcohol, consumed with negativity.

There sadly hasn’t been any let up for Daniel. After Jodie Ramsey (Olivia Frances-Brown) moved in, she created one of her schemes to prevent being thrown out of the flat.

Jodie set up a fake account online called ‘Truthteller’ and proceeded to post awful messages about Daniel. These were viewed by multiple people, and Daniel found it incredibly difficult to defend himself without losing his cool.

Discussing how Daniel’s state of mind is at the moment, star Rob Mallard said: ‘I think he’s just gone straight to anger as a coping mechanism. He’s just angry with everyone and everything. It’s easier to be angry and it feels more powerful to be angry than it is to be sad.’

This week, Daniel got drunk and fell asleep on the sofa, leaving Bertie on his own. The youngster put a metal tray in the microwave in an attempt to make himself some food, but didn’t realise he’d put himself in danger.

Bertie was found by Adam, who was furious with Daniel for neglecting his son.

In yesterday’s episode, Ken and Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney) interrupted Adam and Daniel arguing.

When Adam mentioned Daniel’s late wife Sinead Tinker, his anger bubbled over and he went to punch Adam in the face.

Just as Daniel pulled his arm backwards though, he ended up smacking Ken.

Following these scenes, fans of the ITV soap took to social media to express their worries about Daniel, wondering how long it’ll be until his family actually try and help him.

‘Breaks my heart that they all are being so harsh on him he needs help’, one fan said over on the Coronation Street Instagram page.

Another pointed out: ‘Daniel needs help and support from his family not a lecture about his drinking trying to compare him to peter which is unfair.’

This person wrote: ‘I’m not sure why no one is seeing that Daniel is having a break down. He’s broken. Why aren’t they helping him? Where’s the love and support?’.

This audience member summed up Daniel’s current situation perfectly and added: ‘Poor Daniel he just can’t catch a break!’.

‘It’s like everything is spiralling’, Rob said as he revealed how Daniel felt during those scenes with the Barlows.

‘They all call him out. They corner him in the Barlows and I think he just feels trapped, he goes to lash out at Adam and he catches Ken. It’s always Ken that he seems to hurt. When Daniel’s trapped he comes out fighting and that resentment he feels from his earlier life seems to find its way back towards Ken. He still feels he was abandoned by Ken when he was a kid. So even though they’re in a much better place now, there’s still that resentment simmering away in the background.

‘When I play scenes with Bill, whenever Ken’s trying to give Daniel advice on a life problem, I always play it like a 14 year old, because that’s exactly where they would be in that relationship, that’s where he was left. So Daniel can’t help but turn into a petulant teenager around Ken.’
