Emmerdale’s Cain gutted as Moira’s life support to be switched off in ‘worst case scenario’
Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) was reeling in Emmerale as he overheard a private conversation between wife Moira (Natalie J Robb) and Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick), making a big discovery in the process.
Moira, as viewers know, was diagnosed with a brain tumour last month after a noticeable change in her behaviour, which left her loved ones – namely Cain – incredibly concerned.
In addition to prescribing medication, doctors told Moria that they would monitor the tumour for a bit before deciding if surgery was the best option. This approach left Cain frustrated as he desperately wanted Moira to get better and thus believed surgery was the only solution.
Moira wasn’t too sure at first but, after a particularly frightening incident – which saw her suffer a seizure while looking after son Isaac alone – she resolved to go ahead with the procedure once the hospital found her a suitable date.
The unexpected death of Zak (Steve Halliwell) last week led to Moira postponing her surgery but she was given another date during Thursday’s (October 24) hour-long edition of the ITV soap.
With the surgery now scheduled for the end of November, Cain was relieved.
Moira, however, was still having doubts about the whole thing, struggling to get her mind to silence her fears as she immediately jumped to the worst possible scenario.
Cain assured her that, no matter what happens, he’ll be there to support both her and the kids. But determined to have a plan in place should the worst happen, Moira opened up to Vanessa about getting a living will made.
‘A living will allows me to instruct my doctors on what I would want to happen medically in case I am too incapacitated to let them know’, she said.
‘Worst case scenario. Total brain damage. A machine breathing for me. No chance of recovery. I’d hate to be like that. I’m doing this to spare Cain from having to make that decision if it came to it.’
Moira told Vanessa that she was taking the responsibility away from her loved ones so they never have to be put in such a difficult position.
‘It’s not them switching off my life support. It’s me. It’s my choice and the doctors assured me it would be a last resort’.
Vanessa insisted that Moira tell Cain but she was adamant that she didn’t want him to know. Little did she know, however, that Cain had overheard the whole thing.
The mechanic was supportive without giving away that he knew, urging Moira to spend time to talk to him about her condition but she didn’t really pick up on it, which left him gutted.
Will Moira find out that Cain knows? Will Cain be able to demonstrate that he will respect Moira’s decision?
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 or stream from 7am on ITVX.
