Car crash horror confirmed for Coronation Street legend
Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) has a swanky new car on upcoming Coronation Street episodes – but it’s not destined to stay pristine for long as it’s involved in a massive collision.
Debbie is driving along the Street when little Bertie Osbourne (Rufus Morgan-Smith) dashes out in front of her.
There’s no harm done on this occasion, but Bertie’s dad Daniel (Rob Mallard) is angry with Debbie and it raises tensions between them, already high because it was Debbie who recommended the job in Turkey to Bethany (Lucy Fallon) that led to her getting botched surgery there.
A friend of Debbie’s, the CEO of a cosmetic surgery company, was looking for someone to write advertorial pieces about a new facility that was opening in Turkey. With Bethany’s background in journalism, Debbie thought she’d be perfect for the job.
Unfortunately while she was there Bethany fell prey to her own insecurities about her body and took up the offer of a cosmetic procedure. This went wrong and she developed sepsis and almost died. She’s been left with a permanent stoma and has been struggling with her changed appearance.
For the Platts, Bethany’s ordeal has had a huge impact on them as Gail (Helen Worth) was forced to sell her house to pay for Bethany’s medical bills in Turkey and to have her brought back home while she recovered. This has left David (Jack P Shepherd) contemplating moving out of the only house he’s ever lived in and it’s a massive upheaval for the family.
Daniel is clearly angry about what’s happened to Bethany, and the shock of Bertie almost being run over leads him to vent his anger at Debbie.
He and Debbie start to argue, and Jenny (Sally Ann Matthews) and Daisy (Charlotte Jordan) have to intervene to order Daniel to go home.
Daisy’s heading out herself a short while later – and she’s shocked to see Debbie’s car hurtle past and there’s suddenly a deafening crash.
This shocking development with Debbie comes just days after it was confirmed Sue Devaney will leave her role.
Viewers will see the character diagnosed with dementia in coming months, with a long-running storyline then planned, which promises to be heartbreaking.
‘It’s one of the show’s biggest storylines of the year, and a real chance for Sue to finally get her time in the spotlight – it will just be devastating for fans that it will effectively be her final storyline,’ a source told Metro.
‘It’s one of many major storylines new boss Kate Brooks has in the bag, and there will not be a dry eye in the house.
‘There is no doubt in the Corrie family that she will give the performance of a lifetime and make Debbie’s exit one to remember for years.’
Metro understands that the storyline has a very long way to play out, so Sue will be on our screens beyond 2025.
