Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney) found a sure-fire way of making sure Ken Barlow (William Roache) still needed her services as his carer in Coronation Street. She quietly gave him an overdose of his blood-thinning medication to make sure he felt just ill enough to need her continued assistance.

Not being a pharmacist, Cassie messed up somewhat and it wasn’t long before Ken was in hospital with a nosebleed and the doctors soon realised he’d been a little bit over-medicated.

Tracy (Kate Ford) ended up with the blame for that after Toyah (Georgia Taylor) saw her drop Ken’s pills. After that near miss, because she doesn’t want to actually kill Ken, Cassie changed her regime and has been overdosing Ken on antihistamines.

This has had the effect of making him tired, meaning her relies on Cassie even more.

She continues to manipulate the situation, getting Ken to give her advances on her wages when she needs more cash and generally exploiting him – much to the annoyance of Tracy and Steve (Simon Gregson).

But it isn’t one of them who finally works out what Cassie is up to. The detective who cracks the case is one of the younger members of the Barlow family – Ken’s six year old grandson Bertie Osbourne (Rufus Morgan-Smith).

The occasion is Bertie’s sixth birthday party and everyone is at number 1 for his party. The birthday boy is holding court by sitting on Daisy (Charlotte Jordan)’s knee throughout the proceedings – much to Bethany (Lucy Fallon)’s annoyance.

From this vantage point he spots Cassie putting the antihistamine in Ken’s tea. He asks her what she’s doing and she tells him it’s a secret and he mustn’t tell anyone. He immediately tells his best friend Daisy, who is obviously disturbed by what she hears.

Daisy tells Daniel (Rob Mallard) what Bertie said, but Bethany sees Daisy and Daniel whispering to each other and she’s fuming, thinking that they’re keeping secrets from her. This causes Bethany to get steadily more and more drunk as she hits the Prosecco, until she can barely stand up.

When Daisy goes to help her, Bethany abruptly shrugs her off and Daisy overbalances and has a nasty fall.

Although not many people know, Daisy is pregnant and she’s worried that the fall might have hurt the baby so she makes an excuse to go to A&E.

Meanwhile, in all the commotion, Cassie’s misdemeanour with the antihistamines has been forgotten and it seems like her secret is safe – for now.
