North Shore’s Joanne Froggatt had major and controversial 90s Coronation Street role
Soap fans who have recently tuned into new crime drama North Shore on ITVX may have recognised actress Joanne Froggatt – and it’s because she played an iconic Coronation Street character.
North Shore recently became available to watch in the UK, after initially being released in Australia in 2023.
Joanne plays British trade minister Abigail Crawford, whose daughter is murdered and found in Sydney Harbour.
In the six-part series, a British and Australian detective team up to solve the crime, with viewers praising the plot twist as ‘one of the best of all time’.
Joanne has had a hugely successful career, appearing in major series such as Downton Abbey, Sherwood and Breathtaking, but one of her very first roles was in Corrie.
After a brief appearance in The Bill, Joanne joined the cast of Coronation Street as teenager Zoe Tattersall in 1997.
Zoe fell pregnant at just 15 years old, and arranged to sell her baby to Gary and Judy Mallett.
Zoe reclaimed daughter Shannon after reconciling with her biological father, but tragedy struck when Shannon sadly died a few months later.
Heartbroken Zoe had a breakdown, which led to her kidnapping Fiona Middleton’s baby Morgan, as well as attempting suicide.
Following her devastating loss, Zoe became involved in the Etheric Foundation, which was actually a sinister religious cult called The Cult of Nirab.
Zoe was convinced by the cult leaders that by following their way of life, she would be reunited with Shannon.
Things took a horrifying turn when Zoe announced that she planned to have a baby for the cult, with Ashley Peacock even going so far as to kidnap her in a bid to get her away from the cult and help her to see sense.
However, his actions were all in vain when Zoe left the cobbles to start a new life with the foundation in America in 1998.
Fans were reminded of Zoe’s cult storyline in recent months when Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) was targeted by Rowan Cunliffe of The Autovalent Institute.
Her commitment to The Institute left her relationship with her family in tatters, and also cost her thousands of pounds, though she was thankfully able to escape the clutches of the cult after several months.
