Bethany loses it after being horrified by devastating experience in Coronation Street
Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) has been through a massive ordeal in Coronation Street. When she decided to undergo liposuction in a Turkish hospital she was left fighting for her life when the procedure went wrong. A serious infection took hold, and surgery to save her life led to her needing a permanent stoma bag.
Bethany’s insurance didn’t cover any of her medical care and her family were left having to cover the considerable costs of her treatment, plus the cost of bringing her back to Weatherfield. Gail (Helen Worth) has had to take the decision to sell the family home to cover these expenses.
For Bethany, knowing that she’ll have the storm bag for the rest of her life has been a massive blow to her self-image and she’s struggling to come to terms with it.
Although her boyfriend Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) has repeatedly told her that it makes no difference to how he feels about her, Bethany couldn’t believe that he would stay with her rather than go back to former girlfriend Daisy Midgley (Charlotte Jordan).
Bethany said that she was no longer the person she once was and her life had changed forever. She told Daniel he’d be better off forgetting about her and going back to Daisy.
After a visit from Daisy, Bethany was persuaded to give Daniel another chance and he insisted that his feelings for her hadn’t changed. Despite this, Bethany’s self esteem remains very fragile.
In upcoming episodes Bethany is back home from hospital and is trying to carry on her life as normal. She makes breakfast for Daniel, but is horrified when he walks into the flat without knocking.
It’s the first time that he’s seen her stoma bag – and Bethany is mortified. She yells at him to get out as she’s not ready to be seen and can’t cope with him seeing her altered appearance.
‘She’s embarrassed and worried about being intimate and actually, it’s made her feel even more insecure than she ever felt before she decided to get liposuction,’ Lucy Fallon said.
Can Daniel persuade her that the stoma bag makes no difference to how he feels, and help Bethany start to feel more comfortable with herself?
