‘Where is she?’ Coronation Street fans baffled by legend’s absence from own final storyline
Coronation Street fans have been left baffled by Gail Platt’s (Helen Worth) lack of screen time as the show builds towards the character’s forthcoming departure.
Viewers have been asking ‘where is Gail?’ as the Platt family matriarch appears to be increasingly absent from her own exit storyline, which is currently playing out.
It was announced back in June that actress Helen Worth is set to leave the ITV soap after 50 years before Christmas.
After a period off-screen earlier this year, Gail’s final storyline kicked off last month, as she returned to Weatherfield following a trip to Thailand.
While there, it was said she’d fallen in love with former Corrie character Jesse Chadwick (John Thomson), who previously appeared on the ITV soap from 2008 to 2010.
In actuality, Jesse was hastily written into Gail’s exit plot, as it was originally due to see her reunite with ex-husband Martin Platt (Sean Wilson). However, Sean suddenly left the soap partway through filming due to ‘personal reasons’, with all of his pre-filmed scenes scrapped.
Since Gail has been back from Thailand, she has been at odds with her children Sarah (Tina O’Brien) and David (Jack P Shepherd) over her new relationship and her decision to sell the family home to pay for granddaughter Bethany’s (Lucy Fallon) medical bills.
However, voicing their thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), fans have pointed out Gail has not had much in the way of screen time as these scenes have played out.
One viewer wrote: ‘Where is Gail?? 50 years in the show and this is how she is being written out?’
Another said: ‘Sorry, but where is Gail and why is her fella hanging out with her kids without her?! It’s all a bit bizarre.’
A third posted: ‘“Where is she?” asks David about Gail, yeah where is she in her own storyline?’
Another fan wrote: ‘They better bring back Gail on her last ever episode.’
One opined: ‘The way they are going they could quite easily have Gail’s last episode without her.’
‘Has anyone checked the sinkhole in the garden to see if Gail has fallen into it?’ a fan joked.
Another remarked following Monday’s instalment: ‘Another episode about Gail – without Gail.’
Gail will be back on screen in Wednesday’s episode, however, when her health takes a turn for the worse.
Spotting her breathing unsteadily and clutching her arm, Jesse quickly calls an ambulance.
Is this how Gail departs, or will the Corrie icon get a much-deserved happy ending?
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and from 7am on ITVX.
