Coronation Street Christmas trailer reveals a destroyed marriage and the end of Gail
A dramatic Christmas Day is afoot for the Platt clan in Coronation Street, as Gail Rodwell (Helen Worth) bids farewell after 50 years.
The ITV soap have released a new trailer today that teases an emotional yuletide, with the matriarch making a huge decision about her future.
Actress Helen told fans she was departing the show back in June, and having recently returned to screens to play out her exit storyline, we’ve seen Gail find new love with Jesse Chadwick (John Thomson).
After suffering a near-fatal heart attack, she realised life was too short and the two decided to wed.
Sadly, she doesn’t realise that secrets and lies are bubbling beneath the surface that could threaten to ruin her big day – and in true Weatherfield style, are more than likely to!
Whilst Gail and Jesse prepare for a new life in France, her youngest son David’s (Jack P Shepherd) marriage to wife Shona (Julia Goulding) is on the rocks.
After discovering that David had been intercepting calls and prison visiting orders from her son Clayton Hibbs (Callum Harrison), Shona got revenge by falling into the arms of detective Kit Green (Jacob Roberts).
David has also stolen a hefty amount of money from notorious gangster Harvey Gaskell (Will Mellor) that was intended to pay for his niece Bethany’s (Lucy Fallon) emergency treatment following botched cosmetic surgery in Turkey.
He’s planning to use the cash to buy his home once Gail leaves, though with Jesse well aware of his sudden wealth, it could soon blow the whole family apart – especially since the Radcliffe brothers are now chasing him to return it.
David isn’t the only one harbouring information from his loved ones, as older brother Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) is adamant not to let his affair with Toyah Habeeb (Georgia Taylor) go.
Unwilling to admit to his estranged partner Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) that they’ve reunited, she’s scheming to frame them both for fraud following the betrayal.
Elsewhere, middle Platt child Sarah (Tina O’Brien) is struggling to deal with Bethany’s anguish after facing stigma over her surgery.
The thought of having to live permanently with a stoma bag is too much to bare for her, and as the residents gather inside the Viaduct Bistro for Gail’s wedding, Bethany’s boyfriend Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) pops the question to her outside.
To make matters worse, he’s still madly in love with his ex-fiancée Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan).
If that wasn’t enough, David’s adoptive teenage son Max Turner (Paddy Bever) is standing by his girlfriend Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton), who is locked up for the murder of her abuser Joel Deering (Calum Lill).
She killed in defence of Max, who was stranded atop a viaduct in the middle of nowhere with the vile and vengeful solicitor.
With so much stacked against Gail and the family as a whole, her happy ending looks set to be torn apart – especially if her mum Audrey (Sue Nicholls) has anything to do with it!
‘If you decide to marry that man, you’ll never see me again’ she threatens in the trailer.
Knowing that this will be the sixth (yes, sixth!) man her daughter’s walked down the aisle with, Audrey resorts to desperate measures to try and stop her from making another poor decision.
