Coronation Street legend arrested for fraud as the truth implodes
Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) has been arrested after trying to frame sister Toyah (Georgia Taylor) and ex-fiancé Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) for fraud in Coronation Street.
Over recent weeks, Leanne has been transferring money from the Viaduct Bistro into a fake account that was set up in Toyah’s name.
It all began when she discovered that Toyah and Nick had made things official following their affair.
After intercepting his emails, she learnt that Nick had booked the honeymoon suite in a lavish hotel in Tenerife, and he was forced to take son Sam (Jude Riordan) on the trip instead.
Seeing red, she stole Toyah’s passport and set up the hoax bank account.
Earlier this week, Nick returned from his jaunt and was told by Leanne that a sum of cash that had ‘mysteriously’ gone missing from their restaurant.
Detective Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) then questioned a defiant Toyah, noting that the banking password was the name of her stillborn child, followed by 2001 – the baby’s birth year.
Deciding to play her at his own game, Nick approached Leanne with Toyah’s concerns and she acted appalled that they would consider her to be responsible.
They later met up at the Chariot Square Hotel, where war was declared!
It all kicked off in spectacular fashion on Christmas Day, when Nick was pulled away from his mum Gail’s (Helen Worth) wedding celebrations to be questioned for the fraud.
He remained adamant that he wasn’t responsible and said that Leanne was likely responsible. A huge fight later broke out in the bistro, and both Leanne and Toyah were carted off to the police cells.
In last night’s episode, they woke up and immediately began to bicker.
Leanne began to reel off moments that Toyah had taken things from her in the past – including relationships with Nick, Peter Barlow and Imran Habeeb.
She even mentioned the Care Bear toy that she supposedly stole from her as a child.
Talk about petty!
The two seemed to be on track to making amends again, when Leanne softened upon hearing that Toyah had saved up her pocket money to pay for the toy, and their dad Les had gifted it instead after forgetting to buy her anything.
Elsewhere, Nick sought legal advice from Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) and Alya Nazir (Sair Khan). He bumped into Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney), and learned that Leanne had been staging texts from him during his holiday to make it seem like they were on good terms.
Rushing to his office, he trawled through CCTV footage and spotted that she did indeed have two mobile phones.
This was just the evidence he needed to get her sent down, and Kit soon arrived at the cell to announce that Leanne was under arrest… just as Toyah had made a breakthrough.
She protested her innocence and told Kit that she has no knowledge, answering ’no comment’ to his every question.
After she was released, and feeling deflated following a dressing down from Sam, she drowned her sorrows in the Rovers.
Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) noticed that Leanne was troubled and offered her a place to stay on hiss of for the night.
Will Leanne ever be able to let it go?
