Ben Champniss, an EastEnders star, has opened up about an unexpected health diagnosis.
The actor plays an extra called Shrimpy in the show, who is usually seen working on the market and interacting with the likes of Martin (James Bye), Kim (Tameka Empson) and Kathy (Gillian Taylforth).
Recently, Ben took to social media platform X to reveal he’s recently received an update regarding his health.
The star said he organised a free NHS health check after turning 40, and now hopes talking about it might help other people.
He began: ‘It’s not like me to use social media like this, but I feel that I should, in case it can help even one person. After turning 40 back in September, I decided to ask my doctor for the free NHS health check. Anyone 40+ is entitled to this.
‘My blood results came back and suggested I have Familial Hypercholesterolaemia. A genetic condition that causes extremely high cholesterol levels. There are no symptoms for this. The risk of heart disease, stroke and heart attack is extremely high with this.’
The actor added: ‘For me, statins have been prescribed for my 8.6 cholesterol level due to my Familial Hypercholesterolaemia diagnosis. This has been a serious wake up call for me. Even though this is a genetic issue, I’ve decided to completely rethink my lifestyle. Drink less and move more!
‘I’m the last person to normally preach about health, but if you’re 40 or over and have never been for your FREE NHS health check, I encourage you to do so! You never know, it may help save your life.
‘Sorry for being so serious! Usual Freddie photos, records and days out with my family posts, will resume shortly….! I promise.’
Ben received plenty of kind comments on the post from his followers and fellow EastEnders fans, thanking him for raising awareness and sharing his story.
EastEnders recently confirmed who would be at the centre of the audience’s vote during the anniversary celebrations next month.
Denise Fox (Diane Parish) is currently torn between reuniting with former husband Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) or embarking on a new and passionate romance with secret lover Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara).
Her marriage, as viewers will recall, fell apart last year after policeman Jack had an affair with Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner).
The discovery of such a thing devastated Denise but Jack subsequently redeemed himself in assisting her to cover up Keanu Taylor’s demise – and such a thing momentarily reignited the spark between the two.
Denise, however, has since found herself conflicted, with former flame Ravi back in the frame. The spark between the two has been palpable, with Christmas seeing the pair sharing a kiss.
