EastEnders fans have highlighted the importance of an upcoming story that will see Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) attempt to take his own life.

Viewers have seen the Walford stalwart’s mental health decline over recent months, in the wake of his divorce from Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) and the imprisonment of son Ben (Max Bowden).

He’s also had to witness his true love Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) begin a new relationship with his cousin Teddy (Roland Manookian), and has subsequently begun to sell or give away his business assets.

His struggle with loneliness will result in him experiencing psychosis and hallucinations, which then will lead to a devastating suicide attempt.

It’s likely that the story will tie in with the long-awaited return of Ross Kemp as his brother Grant.

A spokesperson for the show explained: ‘The storyline will follow Phil, and the characters closest to him, as Phil’s depression takes hold and his psychotic symptoms intensify, with the character experiencing hallucinations at the crisis point where he starts to believe his life is no longer worth living.’

Executive producer Chris Clenshaw added: ‘Phil’s depression storyline will focus on his decline in mental health and the subsequent psychotic symptoms, and the reaction of those around him, as we hope to demonstrate how mental health can affect anyone at any time.

‘Steve’s performance is nothing short of extraordinary and has thoughtfully portrayed the complex realities of depression, and the experience of psychotic symptoms, with compassion and understanding.’

Metro reader Sarah-Lou wrote on X: ‘It just goes to show that even those who are thought of as “the strongest” do have moments of vulnerability. I’m pleased that they’re shedding some light on men’s mental health again. In my opinion, it isn’t addressed enough.’

Another, Sal, commented: ‘Steve is going to be incredible telling this relatable story. A fantastic choice of character & actor to share this important message & get conversations going in homes up & down the country. A tough watch to come but safe in the hands of @chris_clenshaw & Steve McFadden.’

Yasmin penned: ‘Gosh, love and respect for Steve – a top actor, this is gonna be a tough watch. Trusting here with Steve he’s gonna nail it.’

‘We knew this was coming…. And Steve McFadden is a PHENOMENAL actor so I know that he will smash this vitally important storyline’ added Sam, in response to the BBC Press Office’s post.

‘He is a very good actor, I am sure he will pull it off convincingly’ said soap fan Andrew.

Sonia Fowler actress Natalie Cassidy shared her opinion, taking to Instagram to write: ‘I can’t describe how brilliant I think Steve is. This will be such an amazing story to watch.’

A number of charities have consulted on the story, to ensure it is executed both sensitively and accurately.
Lorna Fraser, Head of Samaritans’ Media Advice Service, said: The EastEnders team has done a great job capturing the reality of a mental health crisis, and we were delighted to help them tell Phil’s story in a safe and responsible way.

‘It’s good to show the importance of checking in and lending a listening ear in this way.’

Kat Allin, Associate Director of Media & Campaigns at Rethink Mental Illness, said: ‘Phil’s story serves as a powerful reminder that mental illness can affect anyone, highlighting how hard it can be to understand and cope with what’s happening.

‘Our hope is that Phil’s story will resonate with viewers and spark meaningful conversations in homes across the country, encouraging people to rethink their perceptions of mental illness.’
