Ruby Fox-Miligan (Beth Cordingly) felt triggered in last night’s Emmerdale as she was presented with a picture of her pregnant with Steph (Georgia Jay).
Shortly after Ruby’s dad Anthony (Nicholas Day) arrived in the village, he made a comment about Caleb Miligan (William Ash) not being Steph’s father.
A flashback episode of the soap then aired which saw us learn Anthony sexually abused Ruby when she was a child. Ever since, something that has plagued Ruby’s mind is the fact she doesn’t completely know who Steph’s dad is.
The beloved character took action at the start of the week by posting a DNA test. Now, Ruby faces an agonising wait for the results, and it’s understandably impacting her behaviour.
At Mill Cottage, Steph discovered Ruby laying the table for dinner. She commented on how much she’s enjoyed bonding with her mum recently, as the two characters previously clashed most of the time.
Steph then handed her mum a picture from a memory box. It was of a pregnant Ruby, and the last thing she wanted to do was gaze at it and become overwhelmed by her worries.
Ruby snapped at Steph just as Caleb returned home with food. As Steph headed out, Caleb grew frustrated and couldn’t understand the reason for Ruby’s outburst.
‘It was from talking to Chas, plus I think it was all just brought up by her dad being there’, Beth Cordingly explained, revealing why Ruby decided to get a DNA test.
‘She is really struggling and Chas, I think, believes in the love between Caleb and Ruby. Chas is trying to calm her down by saying Caleb would stand by her in any situation. Ruby is obviously terrified, but it is a real problem having not known for 30 years.
‘I think she wants to put her mind at rest, to not be tortured by this anymore but she can’t guarantee that that will happen.
‘The ironic thing, of course, is that if she did have proof, she wouldn’t be able to do anything about it, because she wouldn’t want to destroy Steph’s life. Her head’s in such a mess, I think she’s desperate to tell someone, but desperate not to destroy everyone else’s lives.’
