Emmerdale fans know who is really helping Joe Tate in a new phonebook clue. Joe mysteriously left the village after he managed to steal Caleb Miligan’s kidney and seemingly save his own life.

In big scenes earlier this week, Joe left the village and lied to Caleb that he was away for work. Asked if it was wise for them to speak by Dr Crowley, he told him: “I think it would be odd to not check up on Caleb.”

Dr Crowley then warned: “He’s not your problem anymore. Shaun’s been released this morning pending an investigation and now we’re flying him to Thailand as requested. It’s not cheap.”

“Money well spent. And my car?” he asked, as Dr Crowley replied: “Discreetly delivered back to Home Farm.” Joe then revealed his plan to leave but Dr Crowley was less keen. He said: “You’ve just had your op. You shouldn’t be travelling and not without trained medical staff,” with Joe making plans to leave the Dales for Dubai, which he did at the end of the episode.

Now fans are convinced someone else could be working closely to help Joe. Deciding to delete Dawn’s contact, the camera zoomed into Joe’s phone and his contacts including a Chris, Dave MOT, Dr Crowley, Freddy, Gary, Gina, Hannah and even a Hotten Bakery.

Could one of those people be helping Joe – or is the bakery a cover name for someone else? Only time will tell.

Ned Porteous – who plays Joe – recently opened up about returning to Emmerdale. Speaking about his return, he said: “I was welcomed back to Emmerdale so very kindly, everyone was very nice and it just felt like I’d almost never left.

“It’s such a well oiled machine of a show that I suppose the term would be if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. So when I came back to the show after about a day’s worth of being on set, it felt like I’d really never left. and there’s such a friendly bunch of people and a professional crew that I kind of slid straight back in.”

Whilst fans have many theories about Joe’s true motives, Ned has his own thoughts on his character.

“I have my own theories of what Joe’s been doing. My favourite one’s actually from my brother as he likes to think that Joe was in some kind of cartel prison in South America for years. And that he’s got multiple businesses on the go,” he said.

“So I’m sure he’s got some rather powerful and dangerous friends across the world. He’s a bit of a jet setter or likes to see himself as one. So I have no doubt that he got himself into some trouble here and there making some deals. who knows?”

He added: “He’s an interesting character and he’s quite his fingers and knots of pies, so I like to believe that he was in some nasty trouble in some other part of the world but who knows, he might have just been working in the town next to Leeds, who knows?”
