Cain Dingle will be a shell of himself in upcoming Emmerdale scenes as his wife Moira Dingle will undergo major brain surgery.

The beloved farmer portrayed by Natalie J Robb was diagnosed with a brain tumour in scenes aired on ITV, back in September, sparking fears she may be set for an exit of her own, shortly after the Dingles had to wave an emotional goodbye to patriarch Zak.

And while Moira’s tumour took a toll on her health, her loved ones have been increasingly concerned for her, including her husband Cain Dingle (played by Jeff Hordley). In scenes due to air next week, the mechanic’s downward spiral will reach a troubling climax.

Coming up, Moira continues to prepare for the worst as her operation looms on the horizon but while she tries to keep a levelled head, Cain can’t deal with the threat of losing her. Unable to cope with the uncertainty hovering over their future, Cain isolates himself to the garage.

Moira’s brain surgery will then be followed by a special episode of the Yorkshire-based program, which will be dedicated to how Cain’s day will spiral out of control as he struggles to contain his emotions. In reverse chronological order, the episode will kick off with Caleb Miligan (Will Ash) disappointed to see his half-brother Cain drunk with bloodied hands. But what will happen to Moira? And could Cain’s struggle be provoked by a fatal mishap on the operating table?

This comes after Moira actress Natalie teased what was ahead for her Dales alter ego. Speaking to The Mirror and other press about the storyline, she told us: “I was really excited, everyone was ‘Were you worried they were gonna kill you off?’ She kind of assured me of that straight away and when people decide to do that for you, that’s in the lap of the gods, there’s nothing you can do about it.”

“But I was excited because it had been a while since I’d had a story, and I have to say, the feedback that I’ve had with people on social media, the amount of people that are actually going through this in real life, it’s extraordinary, I had no idea. So it’s been great that we’ve raised awareness and that people have been able to relate to it.”

She then reflected on the impact of the storyline on viewer, adding: “Some people have written, ‘Oh my god, I’m going through the exact same thing’, where Moira is right now, they’ve gone through it in real life. I’ve been at award ceremonies where people have come up and said ‘I’ve had my tumour removed’ and then they’ve shown me the scar and said ‘I’m absolutely fine now’ and always saying ‘Don’t be scared’, like I’m actually going through it – thank goodness I’m not. So it was actually a privilege, it was an honour to get that responsibility.”
