Hollyoaks star reveals Joel and Warren’s violent reunion in flashback episode

"He punches him in the face!"

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks’ stalking story takes a dark turn next week, after Joel found out that Tommy’s brother Billy is in a coma. This triggers Joel’s memories of a dramatic event, and viewers are taken back in time to a day from the show’s missing year.

There’s a sensational return for Warren Fox and twists on some big stories, but Joel also learns some distressing information that will have big consequences.

“He is worried about how safe his secret is,” reveals Rory Douglas-Speed, who plays him. “That’s the driving force behind his future decisions over the next couple of months.”

Rory tells us at Inside Soap all about this intriguing flashback episode, and what it means for Joel…

Hi Rory! Where do we find Joel in the flashback episode?

“Joel is still taking drugs at this point. We saw that process before the time jump, but the flashback shows that he’s still using and he’s still struggling. This really terrible event happens and he has absolutely no recollection of it. Then the next day, Leela tells him that she’s pregnant with Clara, and he decides to stop taking drugs.”

What was it like to go back in time and film these scenes?

“It was fun, and it did feel really strange. What’s nice about the time jump is there are moments you can jump back into, to explore something that wasn’t answered, or pull different stories from it. You can retrace things through the flashback now, and it’s a cool way of telling the story.”

What role does Joel’s dad Warren play in the flashback?

“Joel turns up to buy the drugs he’s after, and he’s met by Warren’s fist – he punches him in the face! It’s a fleeting moment, just one or two scenes, where Warren talks about what he’s planning, then he goes round the village to speak to a couple of other characters. It was nice to shoot with Jamie [Lomas, who plays Warren] again, it felt like nothing had changed, and like it was 2024 all over again!”
