Hollyoaks star Jennifer Metcalfe addresses Jenson twist as story takes dark turn
Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe) sees Jenson Cole (Ryan Clayton) in a different light in Hollyoaks next week following his unexpected proposal, with things set to take a grim turn.
Jenson has proven an enigma since rocking up in the eponymous village earlier this year and, despite his insistence on sticking around, we still know very little about what who he is and what his motives are.
The newcomer, however, did reveal that he’s a long-lost brother of Warren Fox (Jamie Lomas), whose life he set out to destroy when he began a relationship with unsuspecting Mercedes, who was left positively reeling when she uncovered his identity.
Jenson appears to want everything that Warren has and thus when Mercedes suggested they give things a proper go, he was more than happy to do so.
Mercedes star Jennifer Metcalfe told Metro that her alter-ego thinks of the relationship as a bit of fun, branding it ‘light and easy’ in the wake of all the drama with Warren.
‘She’s enjoying Jenson’s company but I question if the main part is to get one up on Warren – in her way, the only way she knows how!,’ Jen admitted.
But while Mercedes is enjoying the fun of a fresh relationship, it became clear this week that Jenson, who has been lording his romance with Mercy in Warren’s face, is much more invested in their future – and thus he popped the question.
Mercedes, much like the viewers at home, was stunned by the development.’Mercedes in no way thinks they’re anywhere near warranting a proposal,’ said Jennifer. ‘She doesn’t think they are there yet.’
As for what the former pub landlady’s answer is remains to be seen but Metro understands that subsequent scenes will be quite unsettling, with Jenson becoming quite possessive and obsessive where Merce is concerned – and she’s set to get a fright when he repeatedly turns up at her house in the aftermath.
As noted earlier, the seeds for such a character turn were planted months ago. ‘He is quite a guarded soul – and obviously some people are guarded in life and there’s nothing shifty about them – but there is an air of that Jenson’, explained Jennifer.
‘He’s just come into the village and nobody knows that much about him. Everything everyone thought they did know when he arrived was all a lie, so he hasn’t set himself in very good stead!’
And as for Warren? The long-time show hard man recently planted cameras at the McQueen residence in the hopes of keeping a watchful eye on his elusive brother, which Mercy remains in the dark about. For now.
‘I think she’d absolutely flip if she found out because how dare he!,’ exclaimed Jennifer. ‘But I think there’s a part of her that would secretly love that he still cares about her so much.’
Despite Mercedes’ insistence that there is no chance of reunion, Jen reckons there will always be a spark between the two.
‘There’s just so much history between them and an undeniable connection that they have,’ she enthused. ‘That will always be there – no matter who they’re with or where they are in the world.’
The soap star was also quick to heap praise on co-stars Jamie Lomas, Ryan Clayton and Tisha Merry, who recently joined the cast as Gemma Johnson.
‘I love working with Ryan and I love working with Jamie, he’s one of my favourite people. It’s been great having Tisha in the mix as well.
‘What great additions both Ryan and Tisha have been to the cast – the dynamics in there! With Mercedes and Warren, there’s years and years worth of storylines – you worry sometimes that that could get slightly boring for the viewers so it’s been great that two strong actors have come in and shook it up.’
