Coronation Street fans have been given good news about the future of one star, amid a wave of cast exits.

Simon Gregson, who plays Corrie legend Steve McDonald, has reportedly signed a new contract to stick with the soap.

Simon, 50, has appeared on the ITV soap since 1989, after joining the cast as a teenager.

He will now stick around for at least another year as the popular character after agreeing a new deal.

An insider told The Sun: ‘Simon Gregson signed a new contract in December to stay on the show. He’s a soap legend so Corrie without him is unthinkable.’

Metro has contacted Coronation Street for comment.

Simon joins fellow actors William Roache, Sally Dynevor and Michael Le Vell in signing new contracts recently.

Earlier this month, the Mirror reported they will continue to play their characters Ken Barlow, Sally Metcalfe and Kevin Webster for at least another year.

However, the show has been hit by a number of cast departures in recent weeks, including the exits of stars Charlotte Jordan, Sue Cleaver and Colson Smith.

Last week, a number of Coronation Street stars spoke out about reports of a ‘crisis’ backstage on the ITV soap.

Andy Whyment, who plays Kirk Sutherland, posted on Instagram: ‘I’d just like to say that the show is not on its knees and there is most certainly not a cast revolt as one article has said.

‘Please don’t believe everything you read, I for at least one cast member am extremely happy and feel very grateful to still be working on Coronation Street,’ he added.

‘Well said darling, me too proud to be part of the Corrie team,’ Claire Sweeney, who plays Cassie Plummer said, while DS Lisa Swain star Vicky Myers added: ‘Absolutely!! Well said Andy.’
