Coronation Street fans horrified by price of a pie in Roy’s Rolls
Coronation Street fans have been left horrified after the price of a pie shot up at Roy's Rolls after the longstanding café reopened following a devastating fire
Coronation Street fans have been left horrified after the price of a pie shot up at Roy’s Rolls, with one viewer writing: “Roy Cropper has officially joined the 1%.”
The café, which has been owned and operated by Roy (played by David Neilson) on the ITV soap for almost 30 years, has long since offered the residents of Weatherfield a menu comprising of traditional greasy spoon items like fried breakfasts and sandwiches as well as tea, coffee and cakes.
But there was yet more drama for the local café owner earlier this year when a fire ripped through the premises. Roy was saved from the blaze and he managed to save a few precious mementos from his wedding to the late Hayley Cropper, but the building itself had to be closed for repairs.
When it reopened in scenes that aired earlier this week, the interiors looked exactly the same, with Roy proclaiming that was the way he wanted it. But eagle-eyed viewers were quick to spot one thing had changed – and that was the price of a plate of pie, chips and mushy peas.
Up until recently, Roy was offering a plate of the classic dish for just £5.50, but a new specials board listed the new cost as £6.95, meaning he had whacked the price up by more than 25%.
Reacting to the price hike, one fan wrote on X: “Roy Cropper has officially joined the 1%. £1.45 price hike just because he put in some new lightbulbs. Capitalism has reached the cobbles,” whilst another said: “I know inflation is bad, is bad, but Roy’s Rolls is now charging London prices for mushy peas. Absolute scenes!”
A third wrote: “Weatherfield has officially been gentrified. One fire and suddenly Roy thinks he’s opening a gastropub in Didsbury. Next he’ll be charging £4 for ‘artisanal’ sourdough toast”
The setting of a backstreet café has been a pretty permanent fixture on the soap over the years. Before Roy arrived, there was Dawson’s Cafe on Rosamund in the late 1970s before Jim Sedgewick purchased it and named it Jim’s Cafe, which his wife Alma (Amanda Barrie) and Gail Tilsey (Helen Worth) ran for a number of years.
Following his debut in 1995, Roy became an employee at the cafe and later bought it, renamed it Roy’s Rolls and, in 1999, he moved the entire premises to Victoria Street, where it still stands today.
Conversely, on the topic of prices, earlier this week, other fans were surprised to discover what was on offer at the Viaduct Bistro when a cocktail menu appeared on-screen.
Nick Tisley (Ben Price) has operated the restaurant in one form or another since 2010, and is currently selling a mojito cocktail for £5.50 at a time when, in real life, most classic alcoholic cocktails retail for almost double that.
Similarly, an apply thyme martini is being sold for just £5.75 and a Viaduct Visa, which consists of rum, pineapple juice and coconut cream, is priced the same.
Upon seeing the menu, which was posted on Reddit, one fan joked: “Makes me nostalgic for a time when going out was reasonable and affordable- back in the 90s!”
Another said: “Quite like the sound of a Viaduct Vista. Quite like those prices too! Chin chin!” whilst a third wrote: “Probably 2010 prices since that was the last time they changed the opening titles/graphics.”
