EastEnders are known for their cliffhangers, but Wednesday’s doof doof will surely go down in history as one of the most dramatic. As the show came to a close, a car with Max Branning, Cindy Beale and their grandson Jimmy crashed into one carrying Ravi Gulati, Priya Nandra-Hart and their children, Avani and Nugget.

EastEnders have confirmed what will happen to the characters following their crash, in which one of the cars flipped. And it leads to an intense storyline for Ravi (Aaron Thiara).

After the crash both families are left shaken, but Ravi returns to Walford, leaving his family behind. When Priya (Sophie Levy) returns to Walford, she desperately searches for Ravi – only to find him on a bridge.

Priya talks to Ravi, trying to make him realise that he needs help following his breakdown and attempt to keep his whole family locked in their flat. Eventually, Ravi agrees to get down to safety.

His suicide storyline was written with the help of Samaritans. Lorna Fraser, the Head of Media Advisory Service at Samaritans, explained why the charity was involved behind the scenes: “Storylines responsibly reflecting experiences of mental health and suicide can help tackle stigma and encourage viewers who might be struggling to talk about how they are feeling.

“We’re proud to have supported EastEnders with covering Ravi’s self-harm and mental health crisis sensitively and grateful for their efforts in making this as safe as possible. We hope it helps anyone watching to seek support if they need it.” Executive producer Ben Wadey added that the soap wanted to handle Ravi’s story with the “care and sensitivity it deserves”.

Meanwhile, Max (Jake Wood) fights to get Jimmy and Cindy (Michelle Collins) out of their car and into safety. Once they are out, he checks everyone over and is grateful to realise they’re all safe.

Max and Cindy, who have been engaging in a secret relationship, shared a moment together before heading to hospital, where they grow even closer.

Outside of the crash, EastEnders on Thursday is set to be a dramatic show, as Nigel’s (Paul Bradley) health worsens. News of his poor health reaches Sam (Kim Medcalfe) and Mark (Stephen Aaron-Sipple) who reach out to Mark’s dad Grant (Ross Kemp), an old friend of Nigel’s. Mark leaves his estranged dad a voicemail, inviting him back to Albert Square.

As he returns to EastEnders 27 years after quitting as Grant Mitchell, Ross Kemp says being back in Albert Square is more scary than anything he encountered while reporting from war zones.

The actor says that playing hard nut Grant still feels more intimidating than dodging real-life baddies with guns, drugs and knives. “Nothing I’ve done fills me with fear more than EastEnders – it is still the one that pushes me the most,” he admitted.

Since leaving Walford in 1999 after nearly a decade in the BBC1 soap, he’s dodged sniper fire in Afghanistan and Syria, challenged drug-traders in Colombia and been forced to his knees by armed guerrillas in Papua New Guinea. He was also once recognised as Grant while running from gunshots in Karachi by a woman in a tuk-tuk with a Brummie accent.
