Hollyoaks brings back James Nightingale again – for a very important reason

Will his offer of help be accepted?

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks has revealed who sent troubled teen Lucas Hay a mysterious letter earlier this week — and it’s none other than James Nightingale. The fan favourite character, previously thought to be dead, was, of course, Lucas’s stepfather as he married Ste Hay in 2023.

In today’s episode, Lucas was visited in prison by ex-boyfriend Dillon who urged him to plead guilty to the charges he faces. Lucas is currently locked up as part of the soap’s child-to-parent abuse storyline, which saw him reacting with fury to the fact that Dillon had slept with Ste.

Tonight, Dillon apologised for the fling, telling Lucas: “We’re not together, Lucas. We never were, not really.”

Lucas fired back: “You slept with my sister when I was in Young Offenders. And when I get out, you sleep with my dad!”

“I’m sorry,” Dillon said. “I know you don’t wanna hear it, but I am.”

After the pair reminisced about first falling for each-other, Dillon urged Lucas to “face up” to his violent actions and plead guilty.

“If you come and see me again, I’ll think about it,” Lucas promised

Later, viewers saw that the letter he received was from James, whom Lucas had thought to be dead. The pair then spoke over the phone, with James saying: “I’m so sorry for all the pain I’ve caused, Lucas. You need to listen. This isn’t gonna be a stint in the Young Offenders. You’re looking at a lengthy prison sentence.”

He added: “I’ll represent you, I’ll give you the best defence; maybe get you off. We can take this to trial. You just need to plead not guilty.”

Dylan’s words in his head, Lucas turned him down, saying: “I can’t. I made a promise to a friend.” He then signed off the call with a cutting: “Rest in peace, James.”

So, what lies ahead for Lucas? Will he take Dillon’s advice and plead guilty? Or will he end up taking James’s help and try to evade jail time?

Elsewhere on the soap, a slew of McQueens have been revealed to be returning in upcoming episodes, all as part of John Paul McQueen’s exit story.

Myra, Sylver, Carmel, Tina and Michaela are all said to be making special appearances, as is Sally St Claire.
