Hollyoaks sign up Coronation Street actress seven years after grooming storyline
Sonia Ibrahim, who played Mel Maguire in Corrie, has joined the cast of Hollyoaks as the mysterious Kat and will be involved in a major storyline alongside Rex Gallagher
Hollyoaks has snapped up a familiar face from the cobbles of Coronation Street for an exciting new plot twist.
Devoted soap viewers will recall actress Sonia Ibrahim’s role as Mel Maguire in Corrie from December 2016 to October 2017.
Mel became entangled in Bethany Platt’s (played by Lucy Fallon) harrowing grooming narrative, aiding villain Nathan Curtis (portrayed by Chris Harper). Mel’s final curtain call involved a tense kidnapping attempt on Bethany, aimed at preventing her court testimony against Nathan which, thankfully, ended with Bethanys release.
Sonia has in the past expressed her pride in joining the Corrie cast, exclaiming: “I was literally over the moon and I cried my eyes out when my agent told me [I was joining]! “.
“It’s such an amazing place to work and it’s been an honour to be here. I was really excited to meet everybody, because I’m a fan of Coronation Street and I watch the show anyway.”, reports Lancs Live.

Since leaving the cobblestone streets, Sonia took up a character on BBC’s Waterloo Road as Jamilah Omar. Now, she is set to intrigue Hollyoaks fans as the enigmatic Kat, linked to resident Rex Gallagher (Jonny Labey).
Her first appearance aired on Wednesday’s (November 20) showing of the Channel 4 drama, where she joined the recent addition Ethaniel Davy, who is stepping into Jacobs shoes.
The exact connections between Rex, Jacob, and Kat are still under wraps, but all signs point to Rex playing a protective role, harboring them within a safe house far from peril.
Rex aired his irritation after arriving at a residence and told Jacob, “What have I told you about this, Jacob? You slipping little notes into my bag has caused me a lot of trouble.”
(
In response, Jacob expressed his feelings of isolation: “I miss my friends Rex. I’m lonely here. I haven’t stepped foot out of this place since I got here.”
Then Kat walked in, exasperatedly remarking, “Not again Jacob.”
In an attempt to show Jacob that he wasn’t confined, Rex approached the front door and declared confidently, “You can leave, feel free. I’m not going to stop you but you know how much danger you are in outside these walls don’t you.”

With a sense of urgency, Kat chimed in, reassuring Rex by saying, “Course he does. Don’t you Jacob” and further added her thanks: “Look, I’m so grateful Rex for keeping us safe. We both are. Aren’t we? ” As Jacob acknowledged with a nod, Rex comforted the young boy, “Well I know you don’t like it here mate, but you ain’t got to worry. You ain’t going to be here for much longer.”
Viewers are left hanging on what or who Rex is shielding Kat and Jacob from, and why their safety seems to be his primary concern.
