Emmerdale fans are in for a shock, as one of the soap’s rising stars has reportedly quit, and it sounds like she won’t be back anytime soon.

Actress Georgia Jay, who played troubled newcomer Steph Miligan, stepped away from the ITV soap last year before welcoming her first child. At the time, her exit seemed temporary… but now it’s a very different story.

According to The Sun, Georgia has decided not to return after maternity leave, choosing instead to focus on life with her baby daughter, Nora.

And for viewers who followed Steph’s intense storyline, it’s a tough pill to swallow.

Steph’s time in the village may have been short, but it was anything but quiet. The character was thrown straight into one of Emmerdale’s darkest fictional plots, as it was revealed she was the result of her mum Ruby being raped by her own father as a child.

The devastating twist rocked Steph to her core, and things only spiralled further when she discovered that Ruby had killed the same grandfather. Suddenly caught up in a web of secrets, lies and a murder cover-up, Steph was pushed to the brink.

The pressure became too much, and in dramatic scenes, she made the decision to leave the village behind and go travelling, seemingly setting up a future return.

But behind the scenes, plans have now changed.

A source told The Sun: ‘Georgia loved her time at Emmerdale but she has no plans to return now. She’s loving being a mum, and that’s her focus for now. Obviously, she’s open to opportunities but returning to a full-on soap schedule full-time is just not something she can do at the moment.’

The actress recently shared a heart-warming snap on social media for her first Mother’s Day, captioning the sweet picture ‘First Mother’s Day and my heart is already so full. Loving you is my favourite role yet.’

It’s a major blow for fans who were expecting Steph to make a comeback, especially given how much unfinished drama her storyline left behind.

Still, in true soap fashion, the door hasn’t been slammed shut completely. Characters disappearing and reappearing years later is all part of the genre, so a future return can’t be ruled out entirely.

Metro have contacted ITV for comment.

Georgia’s reported exit comes during a period of change for the long-running soap. Just last month, The Sun revealed that Olivia Bentley had also been axed, with her exit storyline expected to air later this year.

With cast shake-ups happening and big storylines constantly unfolding, it’s clear things are far from settled in the village.

But for now, Georgia’s focus is firmly off-screen. Instead of scripts and shock twists, she’s embracing a very different kind of role, life as a new mum.

And while Emmerdale viewers may be gutted, it looks like Steph’s dramatic chapter could be closed… at least for now.
